Ian's education and career are characterized by their breadth and combination of left- and right-brain disciplines. In college, studying both arts and sciences, Ian earned an honors degree in ergonomics, which covers such diverse topics as statistics, technology, anatomy and physiology, workplace design, psychology, experimental design, sound, vibration and harshness, nutrition, and environmental extremes.
Ian began his career designing trucks and buses and worked on the Design Award—winning Leyland Roadrunner. He represented Leyland on a number of ISO specialist committees and was the world's leading practitioner of SAMMIE, a man-machine interface modeling program. He consulted on ergonomic issues for Jaguar and Land Rover and lectured at Lanchester and Newcastle Polytechnics.
In 1985 he joined Addison, where he co-ran the transportation and product design department. He led the project to design the driver's cab for London Underground's Central Line train and also worked for BP, Duracell, JCB, Leyland DAF, Nissan, and Shell, and worked on a year-long global-strategy project for Audi. He also lectured at Loughborough University, the Royal College of Art, and Central School of Art and Design.
His dual-brain approach creates a strong link between the rationality of strategy and the inspiration and needs of the creative process. Ian is a believer is the power of simple ideas, beautifully expressed.
